The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office released a press release of an incident that occurred.
According to authorities, 43-year-old William Branch of DeFuniak Springs attempted to carjack a woman who was with her baby outside the restaurant in Fort Walton Beach.
A Chick-Fil-A employee, Mykel Gordon, saw this and intervened, tackling Branch.
WEARTV reporter Olivia Iverson identified the employee on her Twitter page after the police released the press statement on the incident.
“This is the HERO!” The Chick-Fil-A location identified the employee as Mykel Gordon. “At Chick-fil-A our mission is to ‘Serve’ and today Mykel took it further… to ‘Save’”, she tweeted.
“A young employee outside a Fort Walton Beach area restaurant rushed to help a screaming woman holding a baby this afternoon after a man grabbed her keys and tried to take her car,” the press release read.
Branch has since been charged with carjacking with a weapon and battery.
“The victim was getting the infant out of her car at a restaurant at 743 Beal Parkway when she says Branch approached her wielding a stick and demanding her keys,” the press release continued.
“He then grabbed the keys from the waistband of her pants, opened her car door, and got inside.
“When the victim began screaming for help an employee at Chick-Fil-A ran to intervene.
“Branch punched the young man in the face, but the second victim was not seriously injured.
“The employee says Branch had been involved in another incident shortly before the carjacking attempt.”
The police department also shared a video of Gordon’s intervention and praised him for his bravery.
The video shows the Gordon and Branch in a tussle on the floor as the initial victim watches while holding her baby. Gordon eventually got Branch in a headlock as other bystanders came over to assist.
“We want to say a sincere thank you to Ms. Kelner for providing video of a portion of the encounter,” the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said in a follow up post.
“It has been provided to our deputies handling the case. A major shout-out to this young man for his courage.”
Many social media users who saw the video of Gordon have also praised his efforts and insisted he should be rewarded by the police or the city.
